Why a high ceiling is a different design problem
Most catalogue chandeliers are proportioned for residential ceilings of around 2.4 to 3 metres. As a starting point, a circular chandelier reads balanced when its diameter is roughly one third of the width of the area it anchors — a seating cluster in a lobby, the central crossing of a stairwell, or the run of a banquet table. Long, low spaces behave differently: a fixture stretched along the same axis follows the architecture better than a circle does, which is why many of our linear pendant configurations are specified for reception desks, gallery counters and corridors.
Double-height volumes tolerate more generous proportions, but with a limit: leave a clear margin between the outer edge of the chandelier and balconies, beams and partitions, so the piece reads as an object in the space rather than a filling of it.
Drop height and sight lines
The lowest point of the fixture is set by what happens beneath it. Where people gather or pass, keep the bottom comfortably above head height; for a public space, a clearance in the region of 2.5 to 3.5 metres below the lowest point is a sensible starting figure, which the local installer confirms against the electrical code.
Sight lines matter just as much. In a hotel lobby, the chandelier should frame the approach to the reception desk, not block it. In a banquet hall, it should sit above the table plane without cutting across the view between guests. In a stairwell, every half-landing offers a new viewing height, so a tiered or cascading composition can be developed floor by floor. No oversized chandelier travels as a single piece — not because it cannot be made, but because it cannot get through a door. Light sources and drivers are specified for service life as well as appearance: LED modules are replaceable, and drivers sit where a technician can reach them without dismantling the fixture. Dimming is agreed with the lighting consultant — 0–10 V and DALI are common in hospitality and commercial work.
